Borobudur - A State of Mind

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

The universe is constantly reminding us how finite we are. And even in our finite state, we must not forget that we are a part of the infinity. Gazing up at the nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome of Borobudur, in Central Java you will feel the same. Insignificant yes but significant in this world, also a yes!

Why?

Because you have lived to visit the largest ever Buddha Temple in the world, one of the seven wonders of the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

What more could you ask for? Irrespective of your religion or faith, Borobudur welcomes all. It is here you can envisage your entire ‘life’ within whatever limited time you spend. That is the charm of this place.

Borobudur will come as a surprise because of the unexpectedness that comes with it. It showcases the cradle of life. From your birth until after. Here every visitor is a pilgrim. Starting from the base of the monument as you ascend, knowingly or unknowingly you walk through three levels symbolic of Buddhist cosmology: Kāmadhātu (the world of desire), Rūpadhātu (the world of forms) and Arūpadhātu (the world of formlessness). And thereby completing your pilgrimage to this holy place.

Upon reaching the top as you stand looking all around you at 72 filigreed stupas some containing stone-carved Buddha statues and the rest empty (mainly because they were stolen), it is not hard to imagine that it is by your choice to choose your state of mind for Borobudur confirms that Buddha is not a name, not a title, but it is a state of mind translating to enlightenment. And you can choose yours as well!
