Kalaburgi - Looking Past What Appears

Sometimes we must look past what appears before us to discover its real beauty or value. Be it a person or place. As for a person I am leaving that up to you and for one such place I have Kalaburgi or erstwhile Gulbarga for you today. Kalaburgi may neither be on the list of travellers, nor many may be interested in travelling here and that makes it stand apart from any must-visit destinations. Enveloped in the glorious past of Deccan history, Kalaburgi is a silent witness of a time when it was put on the map only to be nearly forgotten now.

From the Chalukyas to the Kakatiyas many left their footprints here. But it was under the Bahmani Sultanate that this place came to prominence as their capital city until the kingdom was broken into five separate Deccan Sultanates.

So here we are chasing the trails of the Deccan Sultanates as we arrive at Kalaburgi. For a traveller like me make no exception to a destination. We are only making discoveries in our own little ways.

Even while forgotten, the Kalaburgi fort remains a constant reminder of the time and reason it was built. For those who seek the untold stories of the past, this is the place to be. Forlorn as it may appear there is an unspoken underlying beauty here. Apart from the fort, there are places like Buddha Vihar, Haft Gumbad, Khwaja Bande Nawaz Dargah and a couple of shrines that you can visit.

Sad as it may seem, today Kalaburgi is nearly erased from the memory of people. So if you happen to be here and especially at the fort remember to pay your silent tribute for it holds a sacred history of India.
