Siiro Homestay, Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh - Responsible Tourism

As our car danced along the bumpy road, the host of Siiro Homestay himself, Mr. Chada turned his head around to ask if we were doing okay in the back. Well, we certainly were except for our jiggling dance-off while trying to hold onto the grab handle above the side of our heads. Apologetically he said how the roads leading to his cottage were unfinished which was quite understandable. Everything outside was pitch black except for occasional flashes from cars or bikes passing by. Upon reaching his place we were greeted by two curious puppies. The night had settled in early already as it always does in this part of our country. Mr. Chada showed us to our perfect wooden room and invited us to join his family for dinner.

The warmth from the sizzling fire of the traditional room heater enveloped us as soon as we stepped inside the dining room. With the embers glowing red as Mr. Chada poked them with a piece of log, the baby flames gleed cheerfully. A table with home-cooked food was laid out in one corner. We were joined by two more couple riders. A good conversation flowed while we sipped homemade wine.

Morning came with a surprise. Stepping outside our cottage everything around looked as if they jumped out of a picture-perfect postcard. Wooden cottages, a garden blooming with flowers, greenery all around and two happy puppies running around. What more you could ask for?

Mr. Chada even took us on an excursion on his farm. Pointing out to various vegetables and fruits that he grows it was clear he was deeply knowledgeable about farming. He has preserved nature at its best. While talking with him, I learned how strongly he believes in responsible tourism. Now that is something we all must take care too. Responsible tourism means respecting your destination's environment, community, and culture. Thinking back now, I realize how well-said words were these. If we take the onus of our destination, our journey will be more memorable too.
